A slot machine, also called the fruit machines, Slots (สล็อต), the pugs, the mini-Slots (สล็อต), or the hot potato, is an electronic gambling machine that generates a game of luck for its players. It may be powered by a single coin battery, which powers it when a lever is pulled, to run by using electricity supplied by the electrical outlet or by means of a battery connected to the machinery. Some machines use two coins as payment and others use one coin. Some machines accept only credit cards while others are cash-only. There may also be machines that accept tokens, pieces of paper, coins, etc., while others do not accept these.

The machines generate winning combinations by getting information from a slot reels or coils. When these reels or coils are spinning at the right speed, the combinations occurring within them are picked up and noticed. These combinations are then investigated and a number of possible outcomes are decided upon. These outcomes are printed on the screen, and the casino managers decide whether or not to pay out. There are a number of things which may cause a slot machine to stop paying. It might be something physical like a bump, a knock, or a drop. It might be something supernatural like a lightning strike. Whatever it might be, it has to be resolved in order for the machine to pay off and give the winning prize.
