I know you’re never supposed to say never, but I never buy store bought sauces, and I never will again. That started when we found out that my husband is a type 1 diabetic, and since there is no way to get rid of it, he had to keep a very close eye on what he eats to keep it in check.

Of course this task ended up falling on me since I do the grocery shopping and the majority of the cooking. My husband was entrusting me with his health, so I had an obligation to deliver. I scrupulously read labels before purchasing anything. We were a big pasta family, so I had to make a switch to veggie pastas to lower his carb intake.

It was also surprising and upsetting to me to see how many added sugars were in many sauces. These were my first two stops in this journey. I dove into research on homemade sauces. I was surprised at just how much I found. We certainly weren’t the first family to run into this issue. I was able to find plenty of resources.

My Cuisinart food processor was well on its way to becoming my best friend in the kitchen. It was the perfect way to purée all of my sauces. Some of my blades had started to dull from prior use, and I knew I’d be putting this thing to work, so I thought it may be wise to order some replacement parts so I could be fully prepared.

I visited KitchenWorksInc, where they sell authentic Cuisinart-dfp-14 parts that are actually made by Cuisinart, not a third party. Once I got my new blades, I switched them out and realized that this purchase was very necessary.

The best part about the whole thing, aside from maintaining my husband’s blood sugar levels, was that I could make large batches of sauces and freeze them for a rotation throughout the month. I knew what all of the ingredients were, and overall we were saving money by making these sauces from scratch.

Once I got into a routine with it, I decided to try some new things and try out different recipes that sounded interesting to my husband. There were some that were definitely keepers, and some others that we weren’t crazy about. It was a lot of trial and error but we have quite a few different things that we use pretty often.

It also turns out that I can make a whole lot of other things to keep his diabetes in check, that would otherwise be sugar overload if I got the store bought versions. I think this is a game changer for anyone with any kind of dietary restriction. It really pays to read food labels and take a bigger look at what you are putting into your body.

I am beyond thankful that I made this discovery on how to make meals healthier. My husband has been maintaining his health with the help of my Cuisinart food processor. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to cut back on sugars, preservatives and a lot of other processed foods.
