All parents know that there’s nothing quite as frightening as your child falling sick.
However, is it right to post a picture of your sick child over social media?
Heather Whitten posted a controversial photo of her sick child on Social Media. Ever since, she has been met with both praise and severe scrutiny.
The controversial photo featured her husband’s torso, as he held their son Fox in the shower. Fox had a high fever and they were taking a cold shower to try and lower his temperature.
Heather simply wanted to capture the tender moment between father and son.
“This man. This husband and partner and father. He was so patient and so loving and so strong with our tiny son in his lap,” Heather posted on Facebook.
It wasn’t long before she was met with criticism for posting an inappropriate picture.
People took offense to the nudity on display.
“They were just hung up on them both being nude and being in the shower. I had crossed a line. It was too intimate. It shouldn’t be shared publicly. But, I disagree.”
Heather, a mother of four, doesn’t see why the nudity has to be an issue, or why it’s considered “inappropriate.”
“There is nothing sexual or exploitative about this image. There aren’t even any “private parts” showing. I wish I could express this all in a better way.”
Apparently, Fox was suffering from salmonella poisoning and he was admitted into a hospital soon after.
This is Fox, all healthy and well now!
The controversial photo had been shared over 38,000 times on Facebook alone, and had received over 170,000 reactions.
Heather had plenty to say about the reaction this photograph stirred up…
Letters were sent to the police citing negligence of parental duty, in reference to the controversial photo. Heather is now under investigation.
However, there are also those who support Heather in these trying times. One commenter said, “As a photographer and a human being, I see nothing wrong with this picture at all. A beautiful moment captured and that’s really what it’s all about.”
Arizona’s Department of Child Safety and the Sahuarita Police Department started investigating Heather after these claims and complaints surfaced.
If it’s determined that she was indeed neglectful, she could be added to a registry that would prevent her from ever working with children.
“I will not be able to hold a position working with children or vulnerable adults. Not just in Arizona but, throughout the country,” said Heather. The police said that the case was likely to be closed, however Heather says that throughout the process the authorities have been biased against her.
